Vanuatu gained independence from Britain and France in 1980, and is now a sovereign nation. The country is a parliamentary democracy with a president as the head of state and a prime minister as the head of government. The capital of Vanuatu is Port Vila, which is located on the island of Efate.

Vanuatu's economy is largely based on agriculture, with the main exports being copra (dried coconut meat), beef, cocoa, and timber. Tourism is also an important sector of the economy, with many visitors coming to the country to enjoy its natural beauty, including its beaches and diving sites.

Vanuatu is a member of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and the Commonwealth of Nations. It is also a member of the Melanesian Spearhead Group, a regional organization of Melanesian countries in the Pacific.
