In terms of geography, Serbia is located in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula, bordered by Kosovo to the south, Montenegro to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the west and northwest, Hungary to the north, Romania and Bulgaria to the east, and North Macedonia to the south. The country has a varied landscape, with the Carpathian Mountains in the north and the Balkan Mountains running through the center of the country. The Danube River, which flows through Serbia and into the Black Sea, is an important transportation and trade route.

Landlocked, no coastline. The north is dominated by the flat Pannonian Plain, while central and southern Serbia turn hilly and mountainous, with the Danube and other rivers forming key natural lines across the country. Temperate continental climate. The mountainous south has historically offered defensible terrain, but the open northern plain has repeatedly served as an invasion corridor into and out of the Balkans.
