Defined by the arc of the Carpathian Mountains enclosing the Transylvanian Plateau, with the fertile Wallachian and Moldavian plains beyond and the Danube forming much of the southern border before reaching the Black Sea coast in the east. Temperate continental climate with cold winters. The mountain arc has historically been a strong defensive shield for the interior, while the open plains and coastline have repeatedly exposed the country to invasion from the east and south.
