Qatar is a small, oil-rich country located on the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. It has a population of about 2.8 million people, the majority of whom are foreign workers. Qatar is surrounded by Saudi Arabia to the south and the United Arab Emirates to the east and north. Qatar has a relatively small land area, but it is the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas and has the world's third-largest natural gas reserves. This has made it one of the wealthiest countries in the world, with a high per-capita income and a strong economy. Qatar is a monarchy. The country follows the principles of Islam and has a conservative society, but it has also worked to modernize and liberalize in recent years. Qatar is home to the international broadcaster Al Jazeera and has a reputation for being relatively open to the press and freedom of expression. Geopolitically, Qatar has a complex relationship with its neighbors and the wider region. It has been accused by some of supporting terrorism, although Qatar denies this and has made efforts to curb the financing of terrorism. It has also been accused of interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, particularly in the Middle East. Qatar has a close relationship with the United States and hosts a large American military base, but it also has strong ties to Iran. In 2017, several of Qatar's neighbors, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, imposed an economic blockade on the country, accusing it of supporting terrorism and destabilizing the region. The blockade was eventually lifted, but relations between Qatar and its neighbors remain strained.

It is bordered by Kosovo to the northwest, Montenegro to the north, Serbia to the northeast, the Republic of North Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south. Albania has a population of about 2.9 million people and the capital is Tirana. Albania has a long and complex history, with roots dating back to ancient Illyria. It has been conquered and ruled by various powers throughout its history, including the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Austro-Hungarians. It declared independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, but was later occupied by fascist Italy during World War II. After the war, it became a communist state under the rule of Enver Hoxha and remained isolated from the rest of the world until the collapse of the communist regime in the early 1990s. Since then, Albania has made progress in transitioning to a market economy and integrating with the international community. It is a member of the United Nations and the Council of Europe, and has applied for membership in the European Union.
