Profile summary of Poland

Poland is a country located in Central Europe. It is bordered by Germany to the west, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and Russia and Lithuania to the north. The country has a population of about 38 million people and its capital is Warsaw.

Poland has a long and complex history, having been invaded and occupied by various powers throughout its existence. After centuries of foreign domination, Poland regained its independence in 1918, following the end of World War I. However, the country was invaded and occupied again by Germany and the Soviet Union during World War II, and it was not until the collapse of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s that Poland fully regained its independence.

Since the fall of communism in 1989, Poland has undergone significant political and economic reforms and has become a member of both the European Union and NATO. The country has a mixed economy and is one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe. It is also an important transit country for energy resources, particularly natural gas, and has a significant agricultural sector.

Poland has a diverse cultural heritage, with influences from its history as a part of both Western and Eastern Europe. The country has a rich tradition of literature, music, and art, and is known for its beautiful landscapes, including the Carpathian Mountains and the Baltic Sea coast.
