Low coastal plains and lagoons give way to dense tropical forest in the south and rolling savanna toward the north. Hot and humid near the coast, drier and more seasonal inland. Has an Atlantic coastline. The terrain is generally open and passable rather than naturally fortified, offering few major barriers to movement across the country.

Its steep, enclosed terrain makes large-scale invasion impractical, and the country's small size and natural isolation have long kept it outside major conflicts.
