Low coastal plains and lagoons give way to dense tropical forest in the south and rolling savanna toward the north. Hot and humid near the coast, drier and more seasonal inland. Has an Atlantic coastline. The terrain is generally open and passable rather than naturally fortified, offering few major barriers to movement across the country.

Landlocked, no coastline. Rugged and mountainous, dominated by the Hindu Kush range, with arid plains and deserts in the south and west. Climate is arid to semiarid, with harsh winters at altitude. Famously difficult to conquer and hold: the high passes and compartmentalized valleys favor local defenders and have worn down successive outside armies over centuries.
