About this relationship

The United States established diplomatic relations with Grenada in 1974 following Grenada's independence. Relations were severely affected by the 1979 revolution and the 1983 U.S.-Caribbean military intervention, but subsequently developed into a stable partnership involving security, development, trade and climate cooperation.

Security cooperation remains an important element. The United States and Grenada cooperate against transnational crime, narcotics trafficking and illicit arms flows through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative. They also maintain agreements covering maritime law enforcement, mutual legal assistance and extradition.

Development cooperation includes education, entrepreneurship, health, climate resilience and energy reform. U.S. programmes have supported Grenadian institutions and communities, while the Peace Corps has maintained an educational presence. Climate adaptation is particularly important because Grenada is highly exposed to hurricanes and other climate-related risks.

Economic relations are significant for Grenada. The United States is one of its principal trading partners, and Grenada benefits from the Caribbean Basin Initiative, which provides preferential access for many exports. Tourism, food products, services and investment form important parts of the economic relationship.

The two countries also cooperate through the United Nations, Organization of American States, CARICOM and other regional institutions. The relationship today is therefore substantially broader than the tensions of the 1980s, with practical cooperation concentrated on security, economic development, education, health and climate resilience.

About Grenada

Grenada is a Caribbean island nation located in the southeastern Caribbean Sea. It is located northwest of Trinidad and Tobago, and south of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The country is a parliamentary democracy with a prime minister as the head of government. It has a population of approximately 112,000 people and its official language is English. Grenada is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Grenada has a small, open economy that is heavily reliant on tourism and agriculture, particularly the cultivation of nutmeg, cocoa, and bananas. The country is also a significant exporter of marine products and has a small manufacturing sector. Grenada is vulnerable to natural disasters, such as hurricanes, which can damage infrastructure and disrupt economic activity.

The United States and the United Kingdom have traditionally been Grenada's major trading partners, although the country has also sought to strengthen its economic ties with other countries in the region, such as China and Venezuela. Grenada has a close relationship with the United States and is a member of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, which is tied to the U.S. dollar.

Grenada has a history of political instability and has experienced several coups and periods of military rule. In 1983, a U.S. invasion of Grenada was launched in response to a coup and the country has since been a stable democracy.

Geography & terrain

A small, mountainous volcanic island in the southeastern Caribbean, ringed entirely by coastline with no interior lowlands to speak of. Tropical climate, warm year-round with a hurricane season. The steep volcanic terrain offers minimal strategic depth; as a small island nation it has no landward defense at all and is fundamentally exposed to any force with naval or air access.

Geography & terrain

Protected on two sides by oceans (Atlantic and Pacific), which has made direct invasion effectively impossible since the 19th century. Interior terrain is highly varied — the Appalachians in the east, the Great Plains in the middle, the Rocky Mountains in the west — but none of it has mattered much militarily given the ocean buffers. Climate ranges from temperate to subtropical to arid, depending on the region.

Solo scenario: Grenada vs United States
Grenada 2.6% United States 97.4%Winner
Battle narrative

Initial phase

With both the bigger war chest and the stronger air force, United States is well placed to seize the initiative early, striking key military and infrastructure targets first.

Force composition

United States can also call on significantly more personnel, counting both active-duty and reserve forces. United States's advantage extends to naval power as well.

Ground campaign

Grenada's terrain could make a rapid ground campaign difficult: The steep volcanic terrain offers minimal strategic depth; as a small island nation it has no landward defense at all and is fundamentally exposed to any force with naval or air access. St. George's would likely be a focal point of the campaign: Grenada's capital and only significant port, through which nearly all seaborne trade and reinforcement would have to pass. United States's terrain could make a rapid ground campaign difficult: Protected on two sides by oceans (Atlantic and Pacific), which has made direct invasion effectively impossible since the 19th century. Panama Canal would likely be a focal point of the campaign: Though not U.S. territory, it remains vital to U.S. naval logistics by allowing rapid fleet transfer between the Atlantic and Pacific without circling South America. United States's larger population could also support a prolonged resistance.

Prolonged conflict

United States's stronger economy could help sustain military operations in a prolonged conflict. Occupying Grenada outright would likely prove costly given its terrain.

Overall assessment

Overall, the numbers favor United States, giving it an estimated 97.4% chance of coming out on top. Turning that edge into a decisive win over Grenada — and holding any ground taken — would still be far from guaranteed.
