A mix of flat, fertile plains in the north and center (the traditional invasion corridor from the east) with the Alps, Pyrenees, and Massif Central providing natural barriers elsewhere. Temperate climate throughout. Comparatively easy to invade from the northeast — most of its historical wars were fought there — but well defended on its mountainous southern and southeastern borders. Long coastlines on the Atlantic, the Channel, and the Mediterranean.

Landlocked, no coastline. Rugged and mountainous, dominated by the Hindu Kush range, with arid plains and deserts in the south and west. Climate is arid to semiarid, with harsh winters at altitude. Famously difficult to conquer and hold: the high passes and compartmentalized valleys favor local defenders and have worn down successive outside armies over centuries.
