Temperate continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. The mountain rim gives real defensive value, but the country's central position amid larger powers has made it a historically contested crossroads rather than a fortress.

Famously difficult to conquer and hold: the high passes and compartmentalized valleys favor local defenders and have worn down successive outside armies over centuries.
