Profile summary of Burundi

Burundi is a landlocked country located in East Africa, bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. It has a population of about 11 million people and is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world.

Burundi gained independence from Belgium in 1962, and since then it has experienced a number of civil wars and political conflicts. The most recent of these was the Burundian Civil War, which lasted from 1993 to 2005 and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

In recent years, Burundi has faced political and economic challenges, including high levels of poverty and unemployment, limited access to education and healthcare, and ongoing political instability. The country has also struggled with issues related to human rights, including widespread corruption, abuse of power, and repression of political opposition.

Despite these challenges, Burundi has made some progress in recent years, including improvements in economic growth and the implementation of a new constitution in 2018. However, the country remains one of the poorest and most fragile states in the world, and it continues to face significant challenges in the areas of governance, development, and stability.
